This Machine is a combination of folk and roots styles drawing from the traditions of Seeger, Guthrie, Leadbelly, The Almanac Singers, jug band music, blues and labor songs. The trio incorporates the older songs with newer interpretations, preserving melodies and stories while re-presenting them with contemporary musical innovation in conjunction with lyrical social commentary. Adam, raised outside Boston, and now hailing from Shelburne Falls MA, has played folk music for nearly 25 years, and provides vocals, rhythm and picking on a long-neck banjo, and contributes some of his own songs; Liam Gude grew up steeped in American folk, and has since fallen in love with the blues as well. He plays guitar, slide guitar, and works to play harmonica in the style of Geordie Gude, Woody Guthrie, and Sonny Terry; and Andrew Fries, music teacher and multi instrumentalist, who spent his earlier life in Nebraska and Missouri, and now resides in Brattleboro, Vermont, sings high harmony and backs the group on bass.
