Hollow Deck, 7pm and Darlin’, 9pm
Friday, November 3
Hollow Deck is the Western MA based duo project of Mia Friedman and Andy Allen, a collaboration that began over 10 years ago. Their sound blends and juxtaposes elements of folk music, free jazz and sound collage to create something unique and beautiful.
“Western Mass’s most exciting live band… Using a large array of instruments — banjo, fiddle, tenor sax, clarinet, flute, drum machine, etc. — the duo easily transcends any real or imaginary boundaries of what’s possible to do with just four hands. The results are as amazing as they are hard to categorize.”
Their most recent album, “Over East” came out in September 2023 on Tripticks Tapes and will be available at the show. Their first 2 albums “Hobson’s Choice” and “All the Roots” were released on Feeding Tube Records.Links:
Darlin’ is the literal dream trio of guitarist Wendy Eisenberg, drummer Ryan Sawyer, and cellist Lester St. Louis—“I had a sequence of dreams in the fall of 2022,” says Eisenberg, “In one, Ryan and I, who had never deeply met, were playing my songs, refracting them into a web of ropes of light. The second was that Lester was playing the cello like it was the shadow crosshatched under a drawing of a huge granite sphere. The first time we played was at Union Pool, where Nate Wooley had gotten the flu and they needed somebody to fill in for him. It felt like this trio had been on the road for twenty years.” The trio’s performances ebb and flow between long, improvisational pieces and composed songs from each of the artists’ repertoires, setting the sonic intersection between Blaze Foley and the New York Art Quartet.
